Willow Oak
It is an oak, but its leaves resemble the willow • Its deep roots stabilize the soil • It disperses its tiny acorns through birds and squirrels
Slash Pine
It can grow in swampy areas known as slashes • Because it is resistant to decay, it was used in ship building • It actively absorbs CO2 • Its long needles absorb more sunlight than competitors
West Indian Mahogany
Besides being used for furniture it is prized for making musical instruments • Its strong root system helps it withstand hurricanes • Was favored for ship building in the 18th century
Bald Cypress
Prevents erosion in wetlands • Its knees help it to breathe • Has been used to build coffins because of its water resistance • Doesn’t release its seeds until it is 25 years old • Is “bald” because it is deciduous and sheds its needles
Burmese Fishtail Palm
Popular in landscaping • Its fruit is toxic to human but food for certain birds • Its flowering process over time will kill it • Called “fishtail” because of the shape of its leaves
Red Maple
Like the Sugar maple, red maple is a source of sugar • It can switch genders or even become a hermaphrodite • Quick decomposition of its leaves helps the soil
Cabbage Palm
Has many uses: young leaves create Heart of Palm, seeds are food source for animals, its black fruit can make wine, its leaves can be woven into hats • Can withstand extreme weather – nicknamed the hurricane palm
